The MARQuIS Virtual Network is an area where hospitals that participate in the research of the MARQuIS project can meet and discuss.

The MARQuIS project needs the participation of hospitals in the research

The EU-funded MARQuIS Project has entered the stage of implementation. Hospitals have been and will be invited to participate in the research by completing an online questionnaire.

The MARQuIS project, run by a consortium of European accreditation bodies and academic research units, is seeking to:

  • identify, compare and assess the formal adoption by EU member states of different quality strategies at a national level

  • identify and synthesise the quality requirements for cross-border patients

  • describe in a sample of states how hospitals have applied national quality strategies and met the defined requirements of cross-border patients

  • /li>use these data to draw conclusions about how implementation of national quality strategies enables hospitals to meet defined patient requirements.

The MARQuIS project conference, held in Brussels in October, presented work to date and early findings from the project. Responses on national healthcare quality strategies have been gained from an impressive 22 of the 25 EU member states. Key differences were noted in national approaches to quality improvement such as who drives policy: government, healthcare professionals or patients/users; how hospitals are involved; how implementation is supported across the health care system and the links between quality improvement and performance management.
Initial research has also been carried out on the needs of cross-border patients, where people are treated in a different member state. Issues identified included language barriers and cultural issues such as food and visiting arrangements. More patient views will be sought as the project continues.

Participation from hospitals is vital for the project.

A questionnaire focussing on how hospitals have implemented quality policies has been finalised and was launched on 4 April 2006. A sample of 1200 hospitals from eight countries (Belgium, Czech Republic, France, Ireland, Poland, Spain, The Netherlands and the UK) has been invited to complete the questionnaire.

Participating in this research offers an opportunity for hospitals to be part of a European-wide network of hospitals and to see comparative data of your hospital’s response against the responses of all the other hospitals in the study . Participating organisations can publicise their involvement and this will be acknowledged in project reports. No data on individual hospitals will be published by the MARQuIS project, as participation is unanimous.

A small proportion of the hospitals filling in the questionnaire will be requested to host a site visit, where additional explanatory information will be asked for.
