The MARQuIS team welcomes all readers to the first MARQuIS newsletter of 2007 and wishes all readers a happy and qualitative new year! This newsletter is issued on a three months time interval. The MARQuIS newsletter provides a short overview of the main developments in the project with links to more information on the MARQuIS-website.

Second MARQuIS project conference

On 8 November 2006 the project partners and country coordinators of MARQuIS met in Prague for the second MARQuIS project conference. The agenda of this meeting included project management issues, a presentation of the results so far, a discussion on the tool for the hospital visits and organisational issues surrounding this next step in the project.

Tool for the hospital visits

The next phase in the project is approaching now. In this next step of the project a sample of the hospitals that participated in the questionnaire will be visited by hospital visitors of the MARQuIS project. A tool has been developed based on the questionnaire that will assist the hospital visitors during their visits. The large majority of the questions in the tool expand on the themes already addressed by the electronic questionnaire early in 2006.

Training for hospital visitors in Prague

The two days following the second project conference a training for hospital visitors took place. This training explained the specific purpose of the hospital visits and delineated the difference with normal audits. The purpose of the hospital visits in the MARQuIS project is mainly to test the reliability of the questionnaire, to triangulate results from the questionnaire and the visit and to get more in depth knowledge to the answers given to the questionnaire. Participants to the training in Prague were given a manual to assist them during the hospital visits.

Selection of hospitals for visits

Based on analysis of the responses to the survey a framework for selecting 105 hospitals for site visits has been defined. The distribution of the hospitals is not even among the countries. The selected hospitals will be visited by trained visitors during the coming months.
