The MARQuIS-project

The project “Methods of Assessing Response to Quality Improvement Strategies” (MARQuIS), funded as part of the component on “Scientific Support to Policies” of the European Union's 6th Framework Research Programme, was launched on January 2005 by some of the European leading organizations on the Healthcare Quality field. The project will last for three years. The rationales for the MARQuIS-project to be undertaken are an absence of an explicit basis for comparing healthcare delivery and an increasing mobility of patients throughout Europe.

Aim of the project

The aim of the project is to assess and compare different quality strategies applied throughout the European Union and their potential use in health services when patients move across borders to obtain care. It should provide a first basis to assess the need and the development of formal, quality procedures at EU level for primary and secondary care institutions.

Methodology of the project

The MARQuIS-project is divided into four stages: policy analysis of existing strategies which aim for quality improvement in health care in EU states, relation of them to current EU policies and directives, a field analysis of hospitals, and a final recommendation report. More information…

Current work

Since the project’s start the project partners have been working on: the formation of the Advisory Council, setting up of the website, organisation of the first Project Conference that took place the 14th of October 2005, development of an overview of quality strategies in Europe and of relevant EU regulations, developing the hospital survey for the field testing, and gathering hospitals for the so-called ‘Virtual MARQuIS Network’ (to be used in field test).

Publications so far

‘Obtaining health care in another Member State’ that explores key quality requirements and patient’s rights in European Member States. More information…

Project Conference 14 October

The goals of the first Project Conference were to present the design of the project, overview of initial project results, discuss the envisaged audit exercise, and to provide a broader perspective of quality strategies and actions in Europe. More information...
