In the European Union, borders are increasingly disappearing. Citizens and other actors in the economic and social sectors are seeking more cross-border coope-
ration. In this context, governments and citizens have, however, a limited basis to compare health care delivery and to make choices about where to go for health care. Simultaneously a multitude of (national) quality strategies is applied in European health care systems to assess, assure and improve the quality of care.
The Marquis project (“Methods of Assessing Response to Quality Improvement Strategies”) is designed to help assessing the value of different quality strategies and to provide needed information for countries when contracting care for patients moving across borders and for individual hospitals when reviewing the design of their quality strategies. The results also provide evidence-based advice for further development of formal quality procedures at EU level for health care institutions or for developing existing approaches.

Congress in Venice

The final MARQuIS Conference was December 7, 2007. At this meeting the results of the project were discussed. Thanks to the kind sponsorship of the Veneto Regional Health Authority, the final conference took place in the unique ambience of Palazzo Cavallo Franchetti, Venice.

Context

Neither governments nor citizens have an explicit basis for comparing health care delivery or for making choices about where to go for their health care. Simultaneously a multitude of (national) quality strategies is applied in European health care systems to assess, assure and improve the quality of care.

Expected outcome

This project will help to assess the value of different quality strategies and will provide needed information for countries when contracting care for patients moving across borders and for individual hospitals when reviewing the design of their quality strategies . Also, the results will provide evidence-base advice for further development of formal quality procedures at EU level for health care institutions or for developing existing approaches.
